Artist Paloma Núñez-Regueiro

On this special episode, we are joined by Paloma Núñez-Regueiro to discuss printmaking as both a political act and a personal archive.

 

About the Artist

Paloma Núñez-Regueiro is a Mexican printmaker born in Lima, Peru of a Mexican and a Chinese-Peruvian father. In 1983, when she was 9 years old, her parents made the difficult decision to uproot our family and flee to Mexico because of the guerrilla war (Sendero Luminoso). Núñez-Regueiro attended art college in Mexico, where she came face-to-face with printmaking during my first year at the Facultad de Artes Plásticas (College of Arts) in Xalapa, Veracruz. In 1997, she transferred to the Rochester Institute of Technology. She received the RIT International Scholarship Award and the Mowris/Mulligan Scholarship Award, and then enrolled in the Fine Arts Program with a concentration in printmaking and painting. In 2000, Núñez-Regueiro earned her BFA from this institution. Currently, Núñez-Regueiro lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She is a resident artist at Ypsi Alloy Studios.

Collections of her prints have been acquired by the Henry Ford Cancer Institute Art Collection, the Ann Arbor District Library, and the Ypsilanti Superior Public Library. In 2022, Nunez-Regueiro was the recipient of the Elizabeth Charles Award at the Lansing Art Gallery for her creating visibility for minorities through her artwork. In 2023 was the recipient of the City of Ann Arbor ARPA Arts + Creative Initiative For Youth, BIPOC, or Marginalized Population Fund, and the Washtenaw Artist Grant. In 2024, she received the Art Prize Seed Grant and the Culture Source - Arc Fund.

In 2023 Núñez-Regueiro also participated at the “Conversations in Practice” Artist Residency at Ox Bow Art School and Residency Program. In Summer 2023 Núñez-Regueiro was the artist in residency at the Saugatuck Center for the Art where she not only exhibited her work in a solo show but also she alsohelped in the creation of different art events and educational programs for all ages. In 2024, she was invited to participate in “Dia de Muertos. Where the Past is Present” at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, IL. In 2025 she is the artist in residency at Signal-Return in Detroit, MI.
