“It is my determination to be creative by all means necessary and to be well mentally and internally by all means necessary.”
— Laila Masri
Threads: The Art Exchange is pleased to present our first digital exhibition, By All Means Necessary by Laila Masri curated by Sydney Frakes.
Laila Masri is a Palestinian artist, educator, and curator based in Dubai whose multidisciplinary practice charts an intimate topography of healing, heritage, and creative liberation. With over fifteen years of professional experience, Masri’s work defies categorical boundaries, embracing a layered visual language that navigates the tension between chaos and clarity, fragility and endurance. Through a compelling amalgamation of abstract and figurative mark-making, her canvases pulse with emotional intensity and philosophical inquiry—rendering thought not as narrative, but as an ever-evolving space.
Masri’s journey into mental wellness converges with the ongoing mapping of diasporic memory informed by her lived experience and neurodiverse pedagogy. The artist privileges artistic intention over expectation, surrendering to the process as a radical act of becoming. Whether working on canvas or in her community, she creates spaces, both visual and educational, that are multi-layered, multi-colored, and foremost, fiercely individual. Masri’s work resists creative boundaries, refusing to be defined by a singular cause or tradition. Instead, she offers viewers a window into the interior circuitry of the mind and the boundless nature of the creative psyche.

“In this body of work, I explore the symbiotic relationship between cognitive neuroplasticity and the realm of aerial typography. Amid a constant intake of traumatic news, creating helps me navigate the existential fears of a shifting global landscape — one that is slowly awakening to indigenous human rights. Each canvas becomes a map, translating the fluidity of the world’s terrains and the complex networking of neural connections. Every typographic gesture stands as a testament to the possibilities inherent in the malleability of thought and language, inviting you, the viewer, to contemplate the intersections of cognition, identity, and belonging.”

“For me, it’s about freedom — seeing the process of how thought patterns are formed and how they are mirrored in color, shape, scale, and movement. It’s a harmony of negative space, an intimate walk through of my mind”
